Course Schedule

These courses are self-paced, allowing you flexibility in the time needed to complete the course. You decide the order and progression you'd like to take, allowing you to revisit and review sections in greater depth as needed.

Following the courses, you will complete an assessment which requires you to demonstrate your understanding of key course concepts. Upon successful completion of the assessment you will be awarded an electronic certificate of completion.

Course Progression:

Course 1: Foundations of Parks and Recreation

  • Learn about the history, purpose, and benefits associated with parks and recreation agencies. Gain an understanding of how important parks and recreation agencies are for the health of all communities.

Course 2: Soft Skills and Professional Development

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the importance of practicing soft skills in the parks and recreation context. This course will allow you explore the many ways you can improve how you work with other people, both within your agency and external customers.

Course 3: Onboarding: Health and Safety in the Workplace

  • Learn how to apply health and safety precautions in the workplace. Gain the understanding that safety is the most important facet in any parks and recreation position.

The onboarding suite includes the following elements:

  • Three self-paced, self-study e-courses
  • A Virtual Classroom site for storage of work and feedback
  • Informational text
  • Interactive activities
  • "Learn More" opportunities
  • Supplemental reference materials
  • Informal assessment quizzes
  • Final assessments

Following each course, you will complete an assessment which requires you to demonstrate your understanding of key course concepts. Upon successful completion of the assessments, you will be awarded a certificate of completion.

  • Communicate with your team about safety concerns you observe

These courses are designed to meet the needs of seasonal and part-time parks and recreation employees and their supervisors/department heads.

These courses are designed so that participants do not need to take any prerequisite courses. The Seasonal and Part-Time Staff Onboarding courses are designed so that concepts in the courses will be followed-up and discussed during in-person orientation. A companion facilitation guide for supervisors and department heads is available as part of the Seasonal and Part-Time Staff Onboarding suite. The facilitation guide includes activities and discussion points and can be used as a tool to reinforce the information learned in the courses.

No additional resources are required for this course.

Will I get a certificate after completing the course?

Yes! All courses include a final assessment to evaluate your understanding of key course concepts. A certificate of completion will be offered to you if you complete the assessment with a score of 80% or higher. You will earn a certificate of completion for a certificate program after completing all program assignments and the assessments with a score of 80% or higher.
