About

Random act of violence while visiting a park or recreation facility is unthinkable; however, recent events have shown us that an active shooter situation can occur at any time, and at any place. In recent years, active shooting incidents have occurred across America in schools, malls, movie theatres, concerts, bars, and workplaces, among other places. We have learned through these incidents that it is important to be prepared at all times, wherever we are.

This course will help volunteers, partners and employees of parks and recreation agencies prepare for an active shooter situation. The course is aimed to empower employees with preparation and actions. An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. There is usually no pattern or method to their actions, and since the situation often evolves quickly and is over within minutes, we must be prepared to react quickly and deal with these situations until law enforcement personnel arrive. This course will help you serve as the eyes and ears of the park during an active shooter situation, and will help prepare you to protect the park’s visitors in the event of such a tragedy.
