The course was mainly about the FL Bay region and its Back Country areas. Nothing specific to the 10K Islands in the northern parts of the park. Two totally different areas. If you have a valid USCG Captains License you should not have to take this so called "safety course". The course is more pointed to protecting than safety. The course was informative and helpful in that it contained many links to supporting maps and documents. The only negative is that some of the questions were misleading in the way they were written. In regards to the implementation of this program, it has not been well advertised so it is very likely that most boaters, like myself, who have taken this program only heard about it through word of mouth. This leaves the majority who boat and fish in the National Park at a disadvantage. (Posted on 11/6/2019)

The course was done well. There were a few problems with links and some of the PDF's couldn't be opened with Adobe. The question regarding water depth between channels in grass flats and tannin waters around islands should be reevaluated. The question about boating in the back country is also somewhat misleading. As a boat Captain and Fishing Guide I've spent a lot of time boating and fishing in ENP. I see a lot of people that don't have a clue how to operate a boat in those waters. I think it's good that they are taking this step to educate people HOW and WHY! I only heard about this yesterday (10/02) that it was a requirement. It's going to be a big surprise to a lot of people that go there not knowing. Not sure why there weren't notifications on this. I give 5 stars on content, but only 2 on format. (Posted on 10/3/2019)

New regs and course make boating access easier for tech junkies-not for fishermenReview by daniel
Rating
Helpful but I see some limitations. As a person who has been boating in ENP for +_ 60 years, it seems to me that adherence to the plan, zones and rules almost requires a person to have a smart phone and and interactive map with a gps positioning device on the boat. As an old timer I think the opposite would provide better protection for the park, don't let anyone have a gps except for the rangers. If you learn the bays slowly the park becomes available over time only to those who can appreciate the natural beauty of the area and the ecosystem.. There was a time when folks who did not come from here either needed a guide, or stuck to the channels for fear of getting lost. It was a better time in my opinion. Better for the guides, the fish, and the visitors. Another suggestion-limit the horsepower and boat size in the entire inshore and nearshore areas. (Posted on 9/17/2019)

Good course overall. Why I put “but” in my title is because this place is no joke for boaters. Just because you know boats and think you got it all down, this place will humble you. The emphasis on the shallow water needs to be taken seriously. Take your time and go with someone who is familiar with navigating around this place first. Trust me. One other reviewer stated there is little to no cell service out there. He is 100% correct. My wife bought me a Garmin InReach Mini because there was an emergency and she could not get in touch with me. It links by satellite. It Bluetooths to your phone, it has navigation, you are able to send 160 character text messages, and most of all it has an SOS feature. There is a subscription fee but it’s worth it. Peace of mind because you can get lost very quickly and the whole running aground is a fact. Good Luck!

Pretty good, needs more paddler etiquette and user interface is cumbersomeReview by eric
Rating
I've been fishing and boating all over ENP since the mid 60's. Overall course and content was pretty good. I think it could have included a little more basic USCG navigation exercises. Also the paddler/motor boat encounters needs more expansion and detail. This is probably the number one area of conflict. Paddlers tend to span across channels shoulder to shoulder and in many cases do not even need to be in the channels navigate whereas power boaters have no other option. When traveling in groups through channels, especially narrow channels, paddlers should try to stay in single file and on the same side of the channel.

Lastly user interface needs some work. Very clunky going out to links and having to re-open base course window again. (Posted on 8/5/2019)

I really appreciate that you have enacted this requirement. There are too many people in south Florida waters that do not respect safely operating their own boats, safety of others of the environmental sensitivity of our local environments. The course is straight-forward and comprehensive without being complicated. Some of the questions are a little confusing, so I didn't get 100%, but that's ok! Good job to everyone involved. Let's implement this for Biscayne National Park, local Wildlife Refuges, Dry Tortugas, and the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary. (Posted on 7/28/2019)

As a Keys resident and avid fisherman, there is a certain amount of knowledge and equipment required to safely and successfully navigate in Florida Everglades National Park. This is a very delicate environment that is quite remote in places. Cell phone coverage is often unavailable. This course does a good job of introducing a boater of what needs to be considered before attempting to operate in this area. I still would recommend spending some time going with an experienced boater who knows the area before attempting it on your own for the first time. After the recent storms, not all of the channel markers are preset making it very easy for someone who is not familiar to end up running aground in this delicate environment. (Posted on 5/12/2019)

Thank you for providing very basic, yet very important information for boaters and fishermen who plan to be in the Park. Although I didn’t learn anything as I am a Naples, Florida native, it is refreshing to know that inexperienced boaters wishing to enter the Park legally should have a good understanding of some basic Park laws and common sense from your course. So many rookies to the area can be a hazard to other boaters and our wildlife. So, thank you for the easy to follow boater course and comprehensive quiz! (Posted on 2/28/2019)
